Minister: Supporting ethnic Hungarians a key focus of government’s foreign policy
Supporting ethnic Hungarian communities beyond the border must remain a key focus of Hungary’s foreign policy, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said after talks with the OSCE’s national minorities chief on Thursday.
Hungary’s government sees ethnic Hungarians as assets and links between Hungary and its neighbours, Szijjártó told a press conference held jointly with OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Kairat Abdrakhmanov.
The minister said that though the rights of national minorities were defined by international law, those guarantees were not always enforced everywhere.
Hungary has not had any serious conflicts with Croatia and Slovenia when it comes to their treatment of the Hungarian minority, Szijjártó said, adding that its relations with Serbia were “the best they have ever been”, which he said was also reflected in the local Hungarian community’s quality of life.
Szijjártó noted that Hungary in the past had had serious conflicts with Slovakia and Romania on minority issues, but steps have been taken to resolve them in recent years. Ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, however, “continue to face serious challenges,” he added.
He said the government was aiming to resolve the situation in Ukraine as well, adding that the enforcement of minority rights was not a question of bilateral relations but an issue concerning international law.
Hungary has done “everything it could” to foster good neighbourly relations with Ukraine, Szijjártó said, noting that Hungary had delivered 110 ventilators to the country, organised summer camps for Ukrainian children from families affected by conflict in eastern Ukraine and financed economic development schemes in Transcarpathia.
Hungary therefore believes it can rightfully expect Ukraine to guarantee the rights of the local Hungarian community, he said.
Abdrakhmanov said he was in constant talks with the Ukrainian authorities on the rights of the country’s minority communities. He said he saw signs of progress in the matter and was urging both sides to seek mutually acceptable solutions that could improve the situation of Transcarpathian Hungarians and Hungary-Ukraine relations.

It is the duty of Hungarian government to supporti ethnic Hungarians.
Left-wing governments don’t support ethnic Hungarians.
Ethnic Hungarians = műanyag magyarok, just as Americans desperate to be different because of a tiny bit of Irish DNA call themselves Irish Americans but are called ‘plastic paddies’ by the Irish. DNA sampling in Hungary has shown that there is virtually no Magyar DNA in today’sHungarian population, it is a mix of slavic and germanic DNA for the most part, with a fair amount of Ottoman in the mix.
Diaspora shows his ignorance and prejudice, when he tries to smear Hungarians while failing to recognize the value of our rich and diverse ethnic backgrounds. We know that Petőfi Sándor, our beloved poet and patriot has Serb roots. We also know that Pongrátz Gergely, the legendary commander of Korvin köz has Armenian roots. A number of Aradi vértanuk who fought for Hungary had different national origins but they all died as heroes of Hungarian Nation. They were all Hungarians.
Hungarian haters will never understand what makes Hungarians special. Who cares?
We know that you are man American, you have said so yourself in a comment not long ago. Stop pretending that you are a Hungarian. Yes, you have said you are an “amerikás-magyar” and a “sad American” (your words not mine on the 26th August). Yes you have some family that were Hungarian, end of story. You don’t even live in Hungary. Keep your snout out.
You are a Hungarian hater and you know nothing about Hungarians because you are blinded by hatred. You did not understand one word of my post because of your hatred of Hungarians. “You don’t even live in Hungary.” You are wrong about that also. I am a US educated, retired research-engineer, living in Hungary. After the Soviets crushed the Hungarian uprising, about 200 thousand Hungarians escaped to the West. Many feared reprisals for joining the “Szabadságharc” while other wanted to be free. I am grateful to America for the freedom and opportunities granted to me. I studied and worked hard to make America better and contribute to the science of my profession but I never forgot who I was. Hungary is my home. When the time comes, I will be buried in Hungarian soil next to my parents. A Hungarian hating nothing like you would never understand any of what I said but my Hungarian brothers and sisters will.
I stand corrected about you not living here. That’s all. As for me hating Hungarians, that is ridiculous, but I can’t be bothered to enter into discourse with someone like you. You are not worth it.
